It’s like asking what shoe size you wear. It’s mostly personal preference and what fits you. Try a few and see what you like. Get a feel for what’s on the market and do some shopping around. The more guns you look at, the better your chances will be of making a good choice.

Yes it depends on many factors including age, build, experience species of deer and average distance you would shoot. For a young person I would recomend a 243, 7mm-08, or another caliber that doesn’t have too much recoil. Then as you get older, move to bigger calibers if you choose.

The .30-06 is a versatile round and will certainly work but I agree with lovinglife. You might as well let us buy your shoes.

The 30-06 is a great choice it is very versatile and if you ever want to go black bear hunting or elk and moose hunting it will serve you well. If you are just going to use it for deer at distances of about 100 yards or less a Marlin 336 lever action rifle chambered in 30/30 Winchester would serve you well. A .270 Winchester is also a good choice. These 2 cartridges are more pleasant to shoot than the 30-06 which kicks pretty hard. You have to determine what you will like to hunt and what caliber you are confident you can shoot accurately and make your decision. Good luck!

The .30-06 is by far the most popular caliber for whitetail deer hunting. That doesn’t necessarily make it the best though. A lot will depend on how long of a shot you might have to make. The 7mm maginum is a flatter shooting round and can be better for long range shots of 200 yards or longer. The .270, .30-30, and .308 are also among the more popular guns for whitetail.

But, if you are worried about recoil, as many beginners are, then I would recommend looking at something smaller. The .243 is a sufficient gun for hunting whitetails, and is much easier on the shoulder. The 7mm-08 is also a great whitetail gun. It is the same caliber as the 7mm mag., only with a smaller casing (less gun powder). Going even smaller, I know some people that use a .223. The .223 is the same round used in the M-16 military rifle. It is very low recoil, but is enough to take down a whitetail.

As for a particular brand of rifle, there are many quality manufacturers. Remington, Winchester, and Browning are three American brands that have been around for a long time. I personally use a Browning A-bolt. It is very accurate, and not overly expensive. If you have more money to burn, then Weatherby is a great option.

Don’t know where you live – some areas you not allowed to use rifles but if you can would suggest 30 – 30, 243, 270 great all around guns.

Buy within you budget in 308 or 30-06 bolt action. Many, many white tail kills over 20 plus years…between 50 to 150 yards range.

Since you have never been hunting in your life I think a pop-gun and you should go with your daddy!

There are a lot of cartridge options for deer hunting. Many states set a minimum caliber/energy level that matches up with the .243 Winchester cartridge, while others allow almost any centerfire weapon. I personally don’t think the 223 is adequate for humane shots on deer, and there is an article in the links section about 223. As you mentioned the 30-06 is one of the major hunting cartridges ever, and it is capable of taking all N. American and non-dangerous African game. It wouldn’t be my first choice for Alaskan Browns, but with a 220 grain bullet it will put them down. I use a 30-06 or 300 WSM in my hunting because I hunt both deer and elk and the 30 caliber is the best for both applications. As mentions before, the 243 is the minimum in many states, but for deer I would prefer something like a 6.5×55 Swede,270,257 Roberts, or 308. The larger calibers give you a lot more *********** and provide for a better shot opportunity if the animal is quartering away. Successful hunting means putting the right bullet into the animal in the right place and having the bullet perform as expected. I always recommend getting quality BONDED or Controlled Expansion bullets for large game, bullets like the Nosler Accu-Bond or Partition, Barnes TSX, Sierra Game Kings etc; where the bullet retains as much weight as possible. I reload for my rifles, so I keep up on bullet technologies.
One of the best investments of time for a new hunter besides time behind the gun is to get books and diagrams showing the internal organs and proper shot placement to reach them. The Perfect Shot for N. American and African Game books are wonderful resources for explaining shot placement, and there are others. Looking at 3-D targets and using targets that outline shot placement areas are great tools also.
If I were to get a new rifle solely for deer hunting it would shoot a 270 cartridge with 140 grain Nosler Accu-Bonds and I would be good from 30 feet to 400 yards, which is the ethical envelope for most cartridges and shooters to get the job done right. The 270 is also enough for elk, black bear,moose and antelope. You don’t need a magnum cartridge for hunting, but if you stumble across a bargain 270 WSM that would be a good choice too, but factory ammo for them is expensive. The 30-06 is the 270′s base cartridge and does everything the 270 does with a bigger bullet. I use 165 grain for my 30 calibers for both deer and elk.
Again, any major caliber is going to do well for deer hunting with the proper bullet and shot placement, but I think the 270 and 30-06 give you the best options on rifles chambered for them and the best ammo selection too.

3030 is the best gun for deer

Yes, the 30-06 is a good choice. It has good knockdown power. Now some have and will recommend the .243 :p if you want to track your deer I highly suggest getting the half killer. Because you are a beginner you won’t know good enough shot placement for a dead knockdown with a .243.

The 30-06 is an excellent deer hunting rifle. If your a hunter, I believe the 30-06 is a MUST HAVE rifle, because there is a great selection of ammo, and it can take down any game in North America.

it really just depends on how long of shots your taking, what kind of country your hunting in, and how much gun, and recoil you can handle. if your recoil shy the ’06 is not for you.

If you are a small size person, a Marlin 336 lever action in .35 Remington caliber.

If you are a larger person, a Remingion 700 30-06.

I have used a .243 for 15 years without having any problems killing deer. A .30-06 is probably the most versatile. If the recoil it too much from a standard 150 gr round, several companies make reduced recoil rounds which will make it recoil more like a .243 from what I have heard.

deer aren’t as hard to kill as people make out,its just that most people are poor shots,they don’t take there guns to the range as often as they should. the 30-30 and the 243 a great guns for new and old hunters alike. no matter what gun you get practice with it as often as you can…

I like the 25-06 way better than the 30-06. Less kick and it is plenty for deer. 243 or 308 are good choices for a beginner as well. Find someone that will let you try their gun at a range and you’ll get first hand knowledge before you buy one. Try a couple different calibers to find the one you’re most comfortable with.

G day mate.deer rifles start at a 243 up to 3006.i use a 308 here in Australia there is not much difference between the 3006 and the 308 anything bigger than a 3006 is over kill depending on how far you shoot.My friends use a 30 30,270, 257 Roberts,303,308,7mm,7mm08,my friends that use a 7mm are shooting up to 500 meters and beyond.A lot of people are going to say a 3006 but the 3006 isn’t a accurate rifle also but can still hit a vital area.Also it doesn’t matter how big you are it’s what will kill the animal with the one shot,just because yr a big boy it doesn’t mean for you to get a 3006 what some people would think.My friend is a big guy but he uses a 3030 and drops them with the one shot and no tracking comes in to it,they drop where they were shot.All shots need a good placement shot just be very careful when shooting a 243 or just go for the head shot with that caliber. cheers mate

i personally use a 30-30. win and a 270. win. I also use the 270. win for bear, moose and caribou

I use an old 1903 Springfield 30-06 my grandpa gave my dad and it’s always worked great for deer.

53 year old man. Born in Michigan. Hunted in-alaska,mich,florida,alabama,north carolina,west virgina,canada,colorado,arizona,new mexico and a few not mentioned. Now: you will change and add rifles to your love and sport more often it will seem than your girl changes her mind. But we love it. My first weapon was a compound bow. shot my first bear with it as well and I still have it. I like the 30/30 lever action cost and flexibility is great. you can find one for 200.00 used. money is tight and some are willing to part with the rifle to pay bills. the 308 and the 400 are great high power weapons but you can bring home meat with all but you would not shoot a coyote,with them. to heavy. keep at it find some one who is willing to let you shoot both 30/30 and 30/06. call a gun range and ask. Have you taken the hunters education class. mandatory in most states. and very educational. I took it at 34yrs and never missed a class. Luck

.270 is a great cal to start i love it

yes the 30-06 is excellent, but its not legal in all states my preference is a browning model 92 in 44mag. me and my dad both have taken deer with it and never had to track it. hopes this helps

Your question creates a lot of variables. How do you handle recoil, for example. If you’re not accustom to shooting, a 30/06 might not be a good starting weapon. Shooting accurately is one of the most important aspects of hunting.
What type of topography are you going to hunt? Heavily wooded areas in the eastern part of the country, the plains of the central states or the mountain terrain of the west? Do you expect to make 100 yards or less shots or greater than 300 yard shots? Please remember that shot placement is very important too.
What caliber rifles do other hunters in your area use? Be cautious of buying into the ‘you must have a magnum’ syndrome. A .243 at 80 yards will is as effective as a .338 with a well placed shot, unless you’re in Kodiak country.
For a starting hunter, without a lot of shooting experience, with shots under 300 yards, the smaller calibers like the .243, .260, or .270 should be fine. If recoil isn’t a problem, the .308 or 30/06 will work too.
Just be a good shot before you go hunting.

Josh, I’m sure you have friends who have guns. Go to a range and try them out. Not so much for the looks, but pay attention to the kick. A 30-06 is a nice caliber and will do fine, but if you never shot a gun much, you can develop a bad habit of flinching because of the recoil that a gun has. Buying a large caliber will not put meat on the table if you do not learn how to shoot it properly. So before you buy, try out some different calibers and go with the one that feels good for you.
