Another season for deer hunting in 2009 is upon us and hunters with itchy trigger fingers are ready for action once again. There are some quick facts you should know that will help you score the best buck you always dream of, while educating yourself on the techniques and reality of deer hunting in the upcoming season.

1. Understand the 3 basics that drive a deer in its lifetime: food, shelter for sleep, and mating characteristics. Clover or rye or any green covered area near trails will be a good location to start as their food source. As for sleep, they prefer very thick and dense brushy areas. As for mating time, the will be active for a longer time in the search for a mate.

2. Deer are considered crepuscular animals, which means that they are active during dawn and dusk and tend to sleep during the middle of the day and the middle and late at night.

3. You should always try to fire your first shot from about 25 yards away.

4. Use your computer to download maps, photos, or information collected during your journeys.

5. When it gets hot out, try to enhance comfort by using a good seat with back support. This won’t make you cooler, but if you are more comfortable, it does make things better overall and not test your patience

6. Although heavy rains are not good for deer hunting, light rain will tend to produce deer movement. Deer appear more relaxed during light rains, so you can take advantage of this with a good rain suit, ground blind, or tree stand with a roof. Bring along the proper provisions and be prepared to sit or stalk for extended periods of time.

7. Investigate the food source and locations that the deer will be eating during the hunting season.

8. Deer are color blind… they will not see you as long as you are immobile. Camouflage is useful for bow hunters who want to get in close to the deer for the best kill.

9. Do your research and practice so that you are proficient with the weapon you will use for deer hunting. This assures you of an ethical and safe hunt.

10. If you live in the city and away from the country, try to contact someone you know in the country and find out if they know what areas you should hunt in.
