Raccoon hunters have become a dying breed; what once was a popular rural pastime has now faded into history. There are a few supplies necessary for a successful coon hunt. Since raccoons are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and move around at night, a hunter cannot rely as much on his eyesight. While flashlights might be easier to maneuver, they can also be a nuisance to carry, so a hat mounted light is generally much more practical. There are also a number of accessories available that either have lights on them, are glow in the dark, or at the very least will reflect light to aid the hunter in the dark; a compass with some form of light will definitely prove a worthwhile investment.

Safety is another issue to be especially concerned with when coon hunting. Often times it is a hunt involving more than just a couple of people, and since it happens at night, the hunter needs to be extremely careful. Be sure that everyone stays relatively close together, and that everyone is wearing reflective vests. As long as safety is the top priority, a coon hunt will always be an exciting experience, whether there are any trophies to bring home or not.

The Inuit Eskimo people of the Arctic use their keen observations of their wildlife surroundings to help choose which subjects to portray in their artwork. Pretty well all sorts of Arctic wildlife including seals, walruses, birds and whales are represented in Inuit Eskimo art sculptures. The most popular Arctic wildlife subject for both seasoned artists and fans of Inuit Eskimo art seems to be polar bears. For some reason, the polar bear has been chosen as the top animal to represent the Arctic north. Many Inuit Eskimo soapstone carvers strive to make polar bear sculptures but since this animal is not the easiest subject to carve, usually only experienced individuals can produce decent bears. Novice carvers tend to tackle easier subjects such as seals and whales before moving onto polar bears. This is the main reason why in most cases, a polar bear sculpture will be priced higher than a seal or whale sculpture of similar size.

Although most Inuit Eskimo art sculptures of polar bears tend to be in walking positions with all four legs on the ground, this is not always the case. Sometimes, polar bears are depicted in sitting, lying or even swimming positions. In some instances, finished polar bears also include some sort of prey such as fish or seals. Complex sculptures of hunting scenes can involve a polar bear plus an Inuit hunter and his husky dogs.

One of the most sought after type of Inuit Eskimo art is the dancing polar bear sculpture. These polar bears are portrayed upright with one of the hind legs raised. This makes the bear appear to be dancing as it is balancing on one leg. On occasions, polar bears have been portrayed balancing on one of the front paws with the head towards the ground and hind legs up in the air. This would depict a diving polar bear. Needless to say, only expert carvers can successfully produce any type of sculpture that is balanced on one leg whether it is the front or hind one. Again, this becomes a factor in the overall price of the Inuit Eskimo art sculpture.

Some art critics suggest that the dancing polar bear is not true Inuit Eskimo art since the pose is not representative of real nature. Indeed, many Inuit Eskimo communities do not produce dancing polar bears while others do. Regardless, there is consumer demand for dancing bears so there will always be Inuit Eskimo artists who will make them. The dancing polar bears can be seen as an example of the wild imagination that many Inuit Eskimo artists have.

Guided hunts are not an easy way of hunting in any way. You are still hunting, but you have the advantages of having knowledgeable individuals that can take you to the best places around.

Perhaps that is the most desired aspect of guided hunts. Many people travel to go bear hunting, especially to Canada. When they arrived, they may not know exactly what to do except go out in the sprawling wilderness of Canada and look for something that catches their eye. Hunting isn’t exactly that simple. Well, it is, but you may find yourself unsuccessful. With a guided hunt provided by an outfitter, they know where to take you because they know the best areas. Most of the expert guides have lived in the area for years or their entire lives and have seen bears and their behaviors. They have the knowledge of better predicting where the bears will be and when they will be there as well.

Not only is the knowledge of the guides valuable to you, but the facilities they offer as well. They can set up camps right in the well-known paths of migratory animals such as caribou. They can set up baits as well for animals such as bears. They know many tactics to getting the animals to come out so you have a better chance of getting that prized trophy you came for.

When thinking about hunting, consider a guided hunt. Don’t think of it as an easy way of hunting because there it simply isn’t. It’s a more convenient way that allows you more success. It is difficult to trace the history of the teddy bear, because it appears to have been invented independently at around the same time in America and in Germany. There is no possibility of copying, as communications technology at the time certainly wasn’t good enough for people from opposite sides of the Atlantic to be talking to each other about toy bears – it seems that teddy bears were just an idea whose time had come. For this reason, it is best to trace the American and German stories separately.

In 1902 Germany, the Steiff toy company was trying to come up with new products. The owner’s nephew, Richard Steiff, often visited Stuttgart Zoo to get inspiration for new toys, and on one visit was particularly taken with a cute bear cub. He did lots of drawings of it, and had produced a prototype of the toy, the Steiff Bear, that year.

Teddy bears got their start in America because of a widely-reported event involving President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt going hunting in that same year, 1902. According to the story, Mississippi officials, keen to please the president, took him bear hunting, but the hunt was a failure as there were no bears to be found. One of the officials then brought the president a baby bear that he had caught and invited him to make the kill, but the president refused. Two toy-makers in New York quickly made a cute-looking toy baby bear, calling it ‘Teddy’s Bear’ – and it was a runaway hit, with a huge factory built just to fulfil the demand.

It is here that the two stories meet. When Steiff launched its bear at a 1903 toy fair, the American toy buyers realised that they could import this bear and capitalise on teddy bear fever. They ordered 3,000 Steiff Bears, and the bears quickly became some of the most popular teddies both in Germany and America – and from there, the craze spread worldwide.
