While selecting the proper location for hunting whitetail deer is important, you can increase your odds of success by using a grunt call bring your quarry in closer. But what should features should you look for when selecting a quality call? Here are some recommendations:

Requires low airflow: A grunt call that requires too much air just to operate will likely be loud and only loud. You want to be able to tailor your volume for whatever scenario you are facing. A call requiring little air can be blown softly on a calm day or given a large burst of air for windy days or long distance calling. Flexible: Deer communicate with varying pitches much like we do with voice inflection. Your call should be flexible enough to mimic a wide range of whitetail sounds. Additionally a doe, young buck, and mature buck all sound differently so you need to be able to duplicate all three for any circumstance. Oftentimes this is done by sliding a rubber ring to various locations on the call’s reed to elicit different sounds. Alternately this can be accomplished with plungers like an instrument or finger locations that you apply pressure to. Freeze proof: The weather can get downright frigid in the north woods and that can mean a frozen grunt call. It may work the first few times but once your breath condensates and freezes inside the tube it may be out of action. Don’t let this happen to you. Practice: Whatever model of grunt call you select, be sure to practice, practice, practice. You do not want to be in the woods with a new grunt call any more than you want to take a rifle you’ve never fired before.

Good luck and good hunting!

By: Ben Froland

About the Author:

When it comes to hunting deer, some people prefer bows, some muzzleloaders and some rifles. If you enjoy getting outdoors and taking home a trophy deer using a rifle, it is imperative that you choose the right rifle. Obviously, the goal is to choose something that is comfortable to carry and use but a rifle that would offer a clean shot, as well. The best place to start is by looking at the most popular deer hunting rifles currently on the market.

We wanted to provide some options for popular deer hunting rifles so you would have a starting point when you get ready to start shopping around. Remember, to purchase a high quality rifle does not automatically mean paying a fortune. By taking time to look at rifles through a variety of resources and considering several options, you can end up with an outstanding rifle for your next deer hunting season.

•	Ruger Model 77Mk.11 RSI – This is one of the more compact of deer hunting rifles being sold, which for many people is the ideal choice. As a.308 rifle, it can handle long shots, often more than 300 yards. Many hunters feel this rifle is among the best calibers for whitetail deer hunting. The rifle comes with a 207×32 scope, making it perfect when needing to be covert while stalking deer. The barrel is only 18.5 inches long, causing some extra muzzle blast, but overall it is an exceptional option.

•	Ruger 1A Light Sporter – Another of the top hunting rifles has a nice balance and while similar to the 270 Winchester RSI, hunters feel it offers a few more advantages. This single shot rifle is another good, all-around choice but it is important to choose the appropriate scope.

•	Browning BAR Grade II – For this rifle in 30-06, it fits a 2-7×33 scope, offers great shots, and the beautiful walnut stock with its honey color gives the rifle character even when out in deep woods hunting.

•	Winchester 70 – Although there are many different deer hunting rifles under the Winchester brand, those made prior to 1964 in 30-06 are actually exceptional. Although going with an older rifle such as this might mean searching for missing parts or having the rifle repaired, when out hunting deer with it you will quickly see why it has become a popular choice.

•	Marlin 336ER – This comes in a.356, which handles well. The balance is one of the best for all deer hunting rifles used and although its appearance is very similar to a 30-30 or Remington.35, the magazine is two-thirds longer. The one thing about this deer rifle is that it has power and in fact some hunters say it has more power than needed. For this reason, we recommend it for seasoned hunters.

•	Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Classic – This deer hunting rifle comes in 7mm/08 and the styling is definitely one of the best ever made. The stock is classic, it holds a Leupold Vari-X 11 scope, it is lightweight, compact and a great caliber for hunting deer. Hunters who use this particular rifle agree that no matter the scenario or environment this Winchester is well worth buying.

•	Browning BLR – The last of the popular deer hunting rifles that we wanted to mention is this, which is a.358 Winchester. The performance and handling is great, it easily holds a Weaver Classic scope and the design and weight make the rifle easy to carry.

By: Keith Cantelmo

About the Author:

Arizona mule deer hunting is a very popular sport in the state, and has been for quite some time. Very simply, Arizona offers a lot more wildlife than most people think; it is not simply all desert. There are many deer that live and the state, and therefore the hunting there is very abundant.

For many people, hunting for mule deer is all about the scenery that they are hunting and, not so much the hunting itself. This is because the mule deer generally live in some of the most beautiful places in America.

In fact, sometimes just being out in the nature that they live in is enough, even if you don’t catch any deer and your trip. Believe it or not, Arizona offers a lot of great scenery in addition to the Grand Canyon, and when you hunt for mule deer, you will find this out.

Often times, being out there is simply a great way to unwind and relax after a long work week, and get rejuvenated. Of course, if you are interested in catching some mule deer during your Arizona hunting excursion, hopefully these tips will help you to achieve success.

Obviously, the most important part about hunting for mule deer is to be in shape. Very simply, this is even more important with mule deer than it is with most other kinds, because of some of the remote locations that they live in.

With other deer, you can often times simply go into your backyard and hunt, assuming you live in a wooded area. This usually is not the case with mule deer. Because they live so far out, you’ll have to do a lot of walking, and therefore be in very good shape.

Also, practice shooting as much as possible, so that you can simulate a real-life Arizona mule deer hunting shooting experience. For this, go down to the driving range and practice at ranges of about 300 yards.

Start out of 100 yards, and work your way out. This is similar to golf in that when you start practicing golf, you would start with your pitching wedge, and work your way up with to your driver. Hunting is really very similar. This is probably the typical range you will be shooting the Arizona mule deer in real life, so you want to get as good at this range as possible.

Generally speaking, mule deer like to stay into the fields and valleys, but also sometimes wander up on to the bridges to do their feeding. Therefore, you want to be sure you know where they plan and feeding before you go on.

As I’ve often advocated, without knowing this, how can you ever be a successful as you can otherwise be? No matter how good a hunter you might be, if there are no animals to hunt, you will never really catch anything.

Therefore, knowing the area you plan on hunting and, and knowing where the deer will be migrating to, is the most important part of your hunting trip. Everything else is secondary.

Another great Arizona mule deer hunting tip is that, if you are shooting for a buck, when you see a group of does there will generally be a buck either behind them or with them. Therefore, you can generally count on this when you’re hunting for mule deer, and you can go after some of the biggest here you can find.

Also, if there is a group of does and there is no buck, don’t simply give up and going to the next location; wait and be prepared. Often times, the buck takes up the rear of the group, so you need to be prepared even if it doesn’t show up immediately.

Of course, if you do plan on taking part in stalk hunting, this is very difficult with mule deer, but can still be done. For this, make sure that you know exactly where you are going to go as you follow the deer; be sure you have the plan is to which brush, rocks, you cannot hide behind.

This is sometimes necessary if the original location you are in does not have the best chance to catch the deer. Ideally you will have this stalk route plan out beforehand, in case your original location doesn’t work out as planned. Hopefully these Arizona mule deer hunting tips will enable you to catch as many deer as possible in the upcoming season.

By: Jerry Jackson

About the Author:

Whitetail deer hunting participation continues to decline. One fact that clearly reflects that decline is the permits being issued in West Virginia. Over the last decade there has been a 20% decline in hunting permits purchased. West Virginia released an initiative to promote hunting in the classroom. Although I do not know the results of that proposal it is a step in the right direction to renew a long standing tradition that has been a part of the American heritage since its first inception.

Robert Wegner widely known as a historian of the whitetail deer has also took a personal initiative to enter two books into a national museum those are Legendary Deer Camps and Legendary Deer Slayers. These books exquisitely document our hunting heritage in out of deer camp since we first arrived on this continent. I highly recommend them for the hunter and non-hunters alike.

I would like to talk about why we are seeing a decline in hunting. Although I do believe it is very important to introduce the younger generation into our long stand tradition I believe there is more at play here. That being hunters leaving our sport in record numbers. Although I do not like calling hunting a sport I truly believe it has become one. While it may not have been intentional we have truly lost our way. What it means to hunt and why we hunt.

With the advent of the internet our views and ideas of what whitetail deer hunting means can be openly discussed on public forums. We get to pick at each other brains and ask questions we normally do not get to discuss but with a close hunting friend.

With more open discussions brings controversial topics to the forefront that even us hunters grapple in our hearts with. On one side we have hunters that feel it is fine to hunt fenced in deer and on the other side we have ethical hunters that feel a free roaming deer is the only ethical way to hunt. The fenced in hunters have big company money that back them with a whole entourage of Hollywood celebrities promoting this type of hunting. My assumption is this debate is the main catalyst that is tearing our tradition apart from within.

With the advent of CWD Chronic Wasting Disease that affects the brain and nervous system leading to death of the cervids across our States that threatens even the free roaming population of deer. The first case of CWD was seen in a group of cervids that were in a high fenced in enclosure. As many states rush to stop the transportation of cervids and exotic species across state lines to control the outbreak we as hunters need to step back and reevaluate these high fenced game farms and any enclosed deer population. Not just on a ethical standpoint but that these game farms and enclosures are widely known and directly tied into the CWD outbreak.

The exploitation of cervids is real and it is extremely popular among some entrepreneur hunters but the fact of the matter is we need to step in as a whole, both hunters and non-hunters alike to deem what is ethical and what is morally right based on scientific evidence presented to us. I truly believe this will save our loved tradition that being whitetail deer hunting.

By: Scot M

About the Author:

Traditionally, deer hunting blinds are used to spot and hunt deer in the wild, hidden among the trees of wooden areas where deer tend to feed and drink.

However, most of these have been commercial products erected in specific deer hunting grounds that are highly commercialized and often part of a deer farm or preserve, where hunters pay to use the land, stay in a cabin or lodge, and make use of blinds on the property.

Of course, some people have long found that they can catch deer practically in their own backyards, hunting in woods near their homes. The problem has arisen with the inability to hide adequately and keep from spooking the deer by making noise or leaving scents down on the ground. However, there are ways to avoid both situations with prefabricated deer hunting blinds. No longer do you have to struggle to build your own blind or pay to use one elsewhere. Instead, you can use a prefabricated construction set and build your own blind.

These units simplify the angles and tower construction so that you can build a rock solid blind on your own, and best of all, they are often easily disassembled and reassembled so that you can transport them to other exciting deer hunting locations for use. Look for steel brackets on your prefabricated deer hunting blinds to assure their sturdiness upon construction, and look for units that offer custom sleeves into which leg posts and framing can easily slide for safety, security, and ease of assembly.

Ultimately, you should be sure that whatever deer hunting blinds you are looking at come with detailed assembly and disassembly instructions so that there are no questions and the safety of the unit is not compromised by guesswork. Also, don’t settle for an expensive setup when you can find something of the same quality for less money. There are plenty of inexpensive units available so that you don’t have to waste time and money. Keep in mind also that deer hunting blinds should assess the basic needs of a hunter and do not need to be luxurious or any particular beautiful color. Green and brown blend in with the woods, camouflaging the unit for deer, and your interior comfort is of no concern to wild animals.

If you’ve ever been involved in hunting deer and sat in a blind for hours on end, you’ll realize that the important elements are visibility and your ability to see the deer from all sides and their inability to see you. Since these elements can easily be accomplished with a small amount of money by opting for one of many prefabricated deer hunting blinds, there is no reason to spend a lot of extra time on building your own or extra money either renting one from someone else or buying one with a lot of “fluff”.

By: David G Johnston

About the Author:

While prerut deer hunting centers around food sources, hunting during the rut is a completely different game. Rutting season or mating season for deer usually occurs during late fall or winter months. The actual time of rut varies from region to region. During this time, bucks are looking for does that are ready to mate rather than for food. Hunting whitetail deer during the rut usually centers around scrape lines along trails or near food sources.

A scrape is a mark in the ground where a buck has pawed the leaves and surface dirt away. This basically lets does in the area know there is an eligible bachelor nearby. Typically a doe that is ready to mate urinates in the scrape. The buck then checks the scrapes periodically and when a doe in heat is detected, the chase is on. Finding a scrape line and placing a stand strategically nearby is one of the best ways to bag a trophy buck. The idea is to try to catch the buck checking the scrapes.

Bucks will also create rubs on trees. A rub is an area on a tree trunk where the bark has been rubbed off by a bucks antlers. Also, nearby twigs or branches may be broken. Bucks create rubs to mark a territory and let does and other bucks know of their presence. Usually a scrape will be near a rub and often any over hanging limbs over a scrape will be broken. Hunting in areas where there are rubs may increase the chances of seeing a trophy buck chasing a doe. Keep in mind that bucks tend to be constantly on the move during the rut so hunting near sign such as fresh scrapes or rubs is imperative to keep up with them. Bucks will freshen a scrape periodically by pawing the dirt again. A scrape that obviously has been left alone for a while probably will not be worth hunting because the buck may be in another area at that time.

In conclusion, hunting during the rut is more unpredictable than hunting in the prerut season. Deer never stay in the same areas much and a scrape used a couple of weeks ago may not be active now. Check scrapes periodically to determine if a buck is still in the area and look for fresh rubs. Always be wary even if scouting because during the rut, that monster buck may show up at any time.

By: Jelena Leger

About the Author:
