Archery is both the skill and the practice of using a bow to shoot arrows and hit a target. These days, it is a renowned sport of precision and accuracy but this skill dates back to early history as a tool for hunting and a weapon in conflict. Archery was seen in the histories of the different cultures all over the continents, all except Australia.

The initial evidence of archery is the “tya,” which is a bow that was probably used for hunting and was later turned into a weapon for combat. These bows ultimately took over the use of the “spear-thrower” as the main tool for launching projectiles. The spear thrower launches projectiles by using leverage to gain a greater velocity. It is made of a shaft with a hook where the end of the spear rests and is thrown by the movement of the upper arm and wrist.

The use of Archery in hunting is more commonly called Bow Hunting. In our modern society, hunting is no longer our main source of food and livelihood. This is because we can buy food and almost anything in shops and grocery stores. In this day and age, hunting is considered as a sport, calling the kill ‘game.’ And, as in all sports, hunting is regulated by a lot of rules and regulations. Some people also target fish and use modified bows. This is called bow fishing.

In North America, for example, regulations for bow hunting concern the hunting unit, which means the location of the hunt; the season, pertaining to the particular time; and what type (male or female) of animal species can be hunted down. Most of the time, Bow hunters are given a special season to hunt so that conflict with rifle hunters are kept at a minimum. Also, there are technical regulations in the hunt such as the minimum draw weight that is applied to the hunting of big game species. This is to maximize shot lethality and game recovery.

Bow hunters are different from rifle hunters because rifles can shoot from a range of more than 200 meters away. A good archer is careful and will restrict his shots to less than 60 meters, taking into consideration several factors such as the archer’s ability, the draw weight regulated and the target animal among others. Good bow hunters also choose to restrict their shooting range and prefer to shoot from a shorter distance. This is to make sure that the target is killed swiftly, humanely and with as little arrows as possible. Shooting from a closer distance allows the hunter a far more personal hunting experience because they get to test the target’s senses of sight, hearing and smell as well as their own. This limit in range is a huge challenge for the hunter and is one of the main reasons why archery hunting is a very striking sport.

As with weapons of war, there are a lot of types of bows that an archer can choose from. Traditional bows like the self bows, the longbows and recurve bows are able to accurately launch their arrows from a distance more than 20 yards but they shoot best when shot from a range of less than 20 meters. Nowadays, compound bows are usually preferred by bow hunters but seeing hunters with recurve bows are also common and legal in North America.

The favorite though is still the longbow because most hunters prefer to make the whole hunting experience as traditional as possible. However, more skill is needed to manipulate a longbow and achieve a clean hit than with other types of bows. Crossbows are generally used by the disabled hunters but its use by able hunters has been allowed in several states in 2005.

True to any weapon, proper training, skill and practice of the archer are needed to be able to bring out the best in a bow and hit a bull’s eye. Even more will be required to take down an animal target cleanly, humanely and with one shot if possible. An excellent archer can kill with one well-placed shot as efficiently as a hunter with a rifle.

By: Michael Russell

About the Author:

Archery hog hunting is a great choice for the hunters looking for an additional challenge, and I good meal. Archery hog hunting is one of the most popular forms of bow hunting. Bow hunters by nature are looking for a challenge by not choosing to hunt with a rifle. Bow hunting takes more physical effort, skill, and patience. The challenge of archery hog hunting can also be dangerous, because wild hogs are aggressive animals: particularly when wounded or cornered.

Hog hunting is legal year-round in many places, because wild hogs are considered a nuisance to their environment, people, and other animals. They also have high reproduction rates, with six to ten people litters. These hogs can destroy land and carry along diseases. The long amount of time that hogs are legally allowed to be hunted adds to the popularity of the sport. Another reason that hog hunting is popular is because wild boar meat is considered a great meal. The danger of hog hunting also attracts many archers.

The prime time for hog hunting is in the late afternoon to early evening. This is when the hogs are most mobile and increases hunters’ chances of spotting one. Many hunters set up still hunting spots. These spots can be baited trails to attract the hogs, and a successful method is by setting up corn feeders. Hunters can wait around the feeders and ambush hogs when they appear. A more demanding method may be by stalking hogs. This can be extremely physical, as it often requires crawling under brush and prolonged walking. When stalking hogs, hunters may use a calling device or travel near known hog trails and feeders. Whichever method you choose, just remember that archery hog hunting can be as dangerous as it is challenging.

Hunting these animals is not for the faint of heart. Hogs can weigh several hundred pounds and some male hogs have large tusks. Hogs are also difficult to kill with an arrow, because they have around two and a half inches of cartilage beneath their skin. This may prevent the arrow from penetrating enough to kill, and may only wound the animal. Hogs are naturally aggressive and will only be angered when wounded. The hunter must be careful to pull away from the animal and hide. If a wounded hog is approaching, the hunter should fire another arrow when the animal is five to six feet away. Many hunters have been wounded while hunting hogs, so it is important to be careful.

Archery hog hunting is a fun and demanding sport than can be a proud kill for any archer. However, even experienced hunters must be careful when hunting these animals.

By: Ted Lake

About the Author:

Although compound bow hunting isn’t as popular as it once was many people still enjoy the sport and will practice and take part in this event regularly. Archery hunting is a skill that will take the correct bow and a great deal of time and patience. You will find that it is not only a worthwhile pastime but also a fantastic way to catch your evening supper. You will have to get closer to your prey than other hunters, meaning you will need to develop a great deal of other skills as well as simply firing the bow and arrow.

It may be tempting to simply buy a bow and arrow and go compound bow hunting but there are several things you will need to learn. This will ensure that you are safe and experienced to do this sport and will achieve great results. The first thing you will need to do is choose the correct bow for you, there are several different types and you will need to select the correct one. Compound bows do vary in price a great deal as archery hunting requires a certain level of skill. You can purchase very expensive ones for expert hunters or more affordable ones if you are just starting out.

You may think buying a cheaper type of compound bow is better but in some cases this can affect your hunting skills. If you can afford it you should attempt to purchase an average priced compound bow as it will get you started well. You will find that you need to learn how to use your new bow and you will be used to only this one and if handed another it will be awkward and feel strange. Your equipment for compound bow hunting will become part of you and it is the vital part to ensure you have a successful day.

Your compound bow will need to pull a weight of at least forty five pounds as this is the ideal weight for hunting deer. The more the bow pulls in weight, the flatter the arrow will travel but you should be able to pull this weight comfortably. Your upper body strength needs to be good for you to go archery hunting and as you do the sport more often you will find that it strengthens. Once you have chosen your ideal equipment then you will need to begin practicing and hunting. You will need to realize that in the beginning you will have several misses and this is all part of learning.

Not only will you be getting used to the compound bow but also you will be clumsy and awkward in the hunting area. You need to learn to be quiet and observant and very patient as you may be sitting for long periods of time whilst compound bow hunting. You will often need to allow the deer to go to you as you cannot simply go rushing into the area hoping the deer will simply be stood there. It is very unlikely that your target will stand still for very long so you will need to be practiced at moving shots. Learning is the key with compound bow hunting the more you know the better you will become.

By: Nicole Roberts

About the Author:
