Most rifle hunters say that bow hunters should rifle hunt while bow hunters say that rifle hunters should pick a bow. In the end do what makes you most happy and most comfortable.

1. Pros-Bow Hunting: Bow hunters definitely don’t have the crowd that rifle hunters have to deal with. Bow hunters rarely see anyone else and being surprised if they do happen upon another bow hunter. Your chances of seeing bigger and more animals increases by 3 times. During the bow season elk and mule deer tend to stay out longer during the morning and come out earlier in the evenings increasing your odds for success. Hunting with a bow requires skill on many levels therefore making it more rewarding in a bow hunters eyes. The weather is better during this season.

2. Cons-Bow Hunting: Bow hunting is difficult. Your percentage for success is much lower than a rifle hunter. Bow equipment is more expensive than a rifle equipment. It can be very frustrating at times, I’ve talked to bow hunters who have spent all day stalking a trophy buck only to get within 70 yards and have the deer catch wind of the hunter and they vanish like a **** in the wind.

1. Pros-Rifle Hunting: Shooting a rifle through a scope at long range is fun and can be challenging especially if you’ve got buck fever. Your success for harvesting an animal increases greatly because of the distance the rifle has that the bow doesn’t. Rifle hunting doesn’t take as much practice as a bow does. It’s cheaper and more people can enjoy and go rifle hunting. The leaves have fallen off the trees making it easier to see the game from longer distances.

2. Cons-Rifle Hunting: Lots of people. Last year I counted 50 trucks coming into the mountain where I was hunting mule deer. Luckily I was already sitting in my position when the rest of the hunters started up the hill. The weather can be horrible and nasty. Many hunters love the cold, snowy, freezing weather because it brings out the deer however some people beg to differ.

By: James Fackrell

About the Author:

Most hunters opt for firearms because they are easier to get used to. If a rare person wants to go in for archery bow hunting, he/she has to master the art first before attempting any real hunting!

Of course, plenty of practice is required. Additionally, the learner should be ready to recognize and accept his/her mistakes. Only then can steps be taken to improve upon those mistakes till perfection is achieved.

The dos and don’ts of archery bow hunting are listed as follows–

(1) All hunting gear should be carefully stored and maintained after every hunt, so that the weapons are in top condition for the next hunt. Before going archery bow hunting, it is necessary to check that the bow is functioning properly. To discover an out-of-tune bow at the hunting site itself is only going to bring sorrow!

(2) Many hunters fail to hit on target because they do not judge distance properly. The bow hunter can use a range finder to measure distances, before the actual hunt itself. This method is very helpful if the hunter is using a tree stand or a blind.

(3) The range finder also proves useful if the hunter prefers to be in a fixed position while archery bow hunting. It gives the correct distance and leaves no room for misjudgment. Trees act like natural distance markers, but rocks and branches can also be put to fair use.

(4) Accuracy carries more weight than speed while archery bow hunting. So the draw weight should be something that the hunter can handle easily; going beyond that is sure to handicap the action of the hunter. Additionally, if a tree stand is being used, drawing the bow is not going to be easy. It is even more difficult in a sitting posture. Thus, draw weight should be assessed carefully.

(5) Some people do not have the patience to wait and get the target into their sights before shooting. Archery bow hunting demands slow and easy actions, not overconfidence.

(6) Where deer are concerned, the aim should be towards the broadside. The shot is bang on target if the animal’s head is behind a tree or it is turned away from the stalker. The deer is a swift animal and easily spooked–so the hunter gets only one chance for a straightforward shot!

(7) Another fact concerning deer hunting. Frequent visits to the same specific location by a hunter are enough to signal the animals not to come anywhere near the place! This is because during every visit, he/she is leaving his/her scent behind. And smart animals can smell it!

(8) The most dreadful mistake that can be committed during archery bow hunting is totally missing the kill zone. A hunter is expected to know the kill zone of every quarry that he stalks. If the prey is just wounded and manages to escape, the hunter has left it open to a large amount of suffering. And this is explicitly forbidden.

By: Abhishek Agarwal

About the Author:

While some hunters prefer to go au’naturale when it comes to hunting, many choose to get some extra help from a bow sight to gain accuracy. Having accurate aim can make all the difference between a clean kill, and watching the animal dart way. Many bow hunting competitions now allow the use of sights, and overall, they work to greatly enhance a hunter’s aim.

There are many different types of bow sights on the market. Choosing which is right for you will depend on how you plan to use the sight, and your own personal preference. For instance, using a high priced target sight will be of no use to the ordinary hunter. The expert at your local archery store will be able to explain all the different uses for different sights.

Most people shoot instinctively, which means they aim and shoot, but accuracy often doesn’t come until there is much practice under a hunter’s belt. Most hunter’s don’t have the time to devote to the amount of practice required, so a sight becomes a great tool. Due to the arc of the arrow, it is necessary to aim upwards to increase the arc, thereby increasing the distance of the arrow. The common bow hunting sight will give you multiple aiming points to shoot different distances; most are color coded to make aiming easier. The hunter only sights with the correct point to find the approximate distance he’s aiming for.

Though this type of sight is the most common, bow sights are catching up with technology. The newest type available is a fiber optic hunting sight. These sights pull in light, creating a point of light to aim for; the longer the fiber, the brighter the point. There are also sights that fit into a protective pin guard, some coming from the side, and some from the bottom of the guard. It is generally believed that greater accuracy is achieved with bottom mounted pins. There are also movable sights that are adjusted according to the distance of the target.

Pendulum sights are another type available often used for tree stand hunting. As with any sight, there are sights of this sort of high quality, and some of not so high quality. Be sure to research before you make any sight purchase to ensure good quality and the sight that is right for you.

By: Abhishek Agarwal

About the Author:

Although archery bow hunting is a super adventure, it is rare to find a successful archery bow hunter. Why? Because, like in all other sports, ther are some very common mistakes that keep hunters away from the trophy. Are you making any of these mistakes in archery bow hunting? Read this article, take steps to correct the mistakes and you are well on your way to bag your prized animal.

The 7 mistakes hunters normally make in archery bow hunting are :-

1. Misjudging distances in archery bow hunting. You can correct this by simply using a range finder and also measuring distances to get an idea before you hunt. This practices is very helpful when you are using a blind or tree stand. If you want to archery bow hunt in a fixed position, a range finder can completely eliminate misjudging distances. Mark distances by using a branch or rock but naturally occurring things like trees work just as well too.

2. Missing the kill zone. It is totally horrible to wound (not kill) and then lose your prey. Imagine how the wounded animal will suffer after that. In archery bow hunting, there is an explicit obligation to be aware of our game’s kill zone so that animals don’t suffer unnecessarily. A deer should be a straightforward broadside shot. Taking a good, sure-kill shot is important too. Take your shot while the animal is facing away from you or with its head behind a tree. Then you are likely to get off a good shot without spooking the animal.

3. Hunting equipment in ill repair. You know how bad it is when you realize that your bow is out of tune. How can you hunt well with equipment this bad? So take the time to properly check and maintain your equipment often. Don’t be caught off guard with poorly maintained equipment or else you are just wasting your time.

4. Drawing too much weight on the bow is another big mistake by hunters. Note that acuracy is much more important to good archery bow hunting than speed and power. If you set your draw weight beyond what you can handle, it will backfire on you as you will not be able to handle the effects.

5. Try to avoid drawing your hunting bow in a tree stand. It is so much easier drawing a bow standing, so if you will be sitting, take this into consideration.

6. Over hunting an area. Every time you hunt in a specific area, you are leaving your own scent there. Leaving your scent behind is like leaving footprints behind and the deer knows it. If you only go to the same place to hunt, you are acutally guaranteeing that no deer will come anywhere close to the place.

7. Shooting before the right time. Don’t get over confident and shoot when you are not supposed to. Wait for the perfect time, take it slow and easy. The best way to approach archery bow hunting is take action at the right place at the right time.

By: Gary T

About the Author:
