Mark and Michael Make it Happen Outdoors while duck hunting. Ended up with a 2 man limit on mallards by 9 am and then sat and watched the duck tornado form. We were hunting over GH Decoys. These birds would sit in the decoys for several minutes and never pick up until they saw us moving. Talk about some great footage and decoys! Stay tuned for part 2! mihoutdoors.blogspot.com facebook.com/mihoutdoors Twitter: mihoutdoors

Duck hunting blinds are camouflaged shelters to conceal the hunter from ducks and other waterfowl when hunting. Duck blinds are permanent or temporary. Meant to conceal hunters so ducks do not notice their movements, some duck blinds are on land while other hunting blinds conceal a hunter’s boat, vehicle, dog, motor, and other items. There is an almost limitless selection of duck blinds for hunting over water. Hunters can make their duck blinds from natural material such as native grasses and vegetation or purchase camouflage hunting blinds. Many public areas prohibit permanent blinds so hunters use temporary duck blinds when hunting in these areas.

Ducks have very good vision so duck blinds should conceal the hunter while blending into the surroundings. In some cases, the natural cover is dense and high enough to hide under but ducks will detect movement so the hunter must stay still. Permanent hunting blinds are usually the most comfortable but building and maintaining the blind is labor intensive.

One disadvantage to a permanent blind is that if the ducks change positions on a body of water, which they do often because they have exhausted the food supply, the wind switches, or the hunting pressure increases, you are not mobile. Hunters with portable blinds easily transport them and set up fast.

Some types of portable blinds include a cameo mesh blind that you drape over poles. You can use this blind both on land and over water to fool the ducks. One-man collapsible duck hunting blinds have an observation window and a seat, which conceals the hunter completely. The hunter collapses the blind by stepping on a pedal when the ducks are close enough to get a clear shot.

Collapsible boat blinds work exactly the same way except they cover the entire Jon or duck boat. Fiberglass one-man coffin duck hunting blinds are really low profile and the hunter stays down by inclining on a backrest. A giant goose, magnum decoy blind with viewing slots, hides the hunters by having them blend into their spread of decoys.

Some of the many permanent duck blinds available include the stilt and box blinds. Theses blinds normally have bench seats, wooden floors and corner posts. Chicken wire covered with vegetation hides the hunters. Box blinds are on land whereas stilt blinds are set in the water.

A boathouse blind is similar to a collapsible boat blind because it covers the entire duck or Jon boat and the hunters. It is almost like a portable garage because they drive heavy posts into the ground with an end opening for the boat to slip out of to recover downed ducks. There is also a door for easy access to a hunting platform.

The Upper Mississippi River offers both puddle duck hunters and diver duck hunters thousands of acres of quality duck hunting in a wide variety of situations. Depending on water levels hunters can find marsh settings in secluded back waters, flooded timber during high waters, typical river hunting settings in countless running sloughs, or reservoir style hunting in large lake styled back waters. After hunting the upper sections of the river now for over 15 years I can say the river offers a true smorgasbord of ducks to hunt and later enjoy at the supper table.

Becoming familiar with the section of river you plan to hunt is a must, both with maps and then by actual scouting as thousands of acres are available from each every boat launch. Before venturing out in the dark I would highly recommend a few scouting trips during the day saving a trail with a GPS unit. In the early fall fog is often a problem on early in the day on colder mornings when the water is still warm. Heading out in the thick fog is certainly not a good idea and I would strongly advise against this, even with a GPS unit.

Puddle ducks are my favorite pursuit when hunting the river and mallards, pintails, teal, shovelers, wood ducks, and widgeon are all plentiful. While thousands of ducks are using any one given pool on the Mississippi River coming home with a limit is not a sure thing. Because the river is so large the ducks have a countless acres to habitat to choose from. Scouting the river is also not real easy a boat must be launched versus scouting from shore. Most sections of the river have countless islands with trees that block your view so a motoring around is necessary to view the countless of back water sloughs and lakes.
But hard work scouting can certainly pay off. Over the years I have enjoyed many successful duck hunts with my son and friends. Whether it’s the early season or hunting major cold fronts and snow storms later in the season I have accumulated many memories of over the years.

Choosing the right boat to bring to the Mississippi River for duck hunting is a hard choice to make. To safely navigate most sections of the river during good weather conditions at minimum a 16 foot boat with a 25hp outboard is needed. A larger motor is even better as you may need to travel up to 6 to 8 miles from the boat ramp to your hunting location. Although many duck hunters will want a blind boat they can hunt out of it can be very difficult to conceal a bigger boat on the river. In most situations I rely on my boat for transportation purposes only and then hunt from natural vegetation.

Hunting the Upper Mississippi River can be a great experience as long as you do your home work first and always think safety. Also be aware that there are no entry refuge zones on the Mississippi River. These areas are marked on maps available from the USFWS along with signs on the water.
Good luck duck hunting this season and always hunt safe!

In America, duck hunting season is generally in the fall and winter, when the birds migrate to a warmer climate and have raised their young. Hunters usually make use of three elements in pursuit of their quarry-shotguns, duck blinds, and decoys.

Duck calls are also used to attract the birds, and hunters frequently bring trained dogs to retrieve the ducks that have been killed or injured.

There are two main categories of ducks:

Puddle ducks – These can be found in rivers and shallow marshes, and their feeding process is known as “dabbling.” They often feed in fields of grain, and they can take off from land or water immediately.

Diving ducks – These have large, deep rivers and lakes for their habitat, and they feed on fish, mollusks, shellfish, and aquatic plants, often diving far below the surface. Their large, webbed feet enable them to swim under water for long distances. They must swim along the surface for several yards before they can become airborne, and they are hunted on lakes, ponds, oceans, and bays.

Hunting safely on land or water

Every hunter should consider taking a hunter education course to benefit from the tips provided on engaging in the sport safely and learn the most up-to-date hunting techniques. Here are a few things to keep in mind whenever you are hunting:

Obtain a detailed map of the area you are visiting, look it over before you go, and take it with you as well. Remember to bring a compass, and be sure that you know how to use it. This may be your only solution if you become disoriented or lost in the field.

If you live in an area where the weather can change quickly, carry a basic survival kit with a knife, a rope, waterproof matches, water, first-aid supplies, and some type of temporary shelter. If you are venturing out on the water, remember to wear a life preserver.

Have some idea of your buddies’ emotional and physical limitations (and your own as well), and don’t permit anyone to exceed those limits.

As a hunter, your best means of concealment may be to create a temporary, natural shelter from marsh vegetation or grasses. (You can then hide in a shrub, a clump of grass, or a tree.)

More complex duck blinds of this type have large branches or logs that are bent together or lashed together with rope. They are usually found in protected areas where a more permanent type of structure is not allowed, and to be effective in concealing hunters from the birds, they should be three dimensional. Boat blinds may be hand-made or purchased from the manufacturer.

Today, decoys are usually made from molded plastic, and they are a long-lasting product with a great amount of detail that comes at a reasonable price. Some even come with life-like movement that increases their attraction for water fowl.
