There are many hunters out there each year hunting down wild boars, mostly because they want to stay in practice when the deer season is closed or because they simply like hunting this type of game. In addition, hogs can be a real nuisance in some areas and eliminating some of them might ease the pressure. Due to the reason that most of the hunters that pursue hogs are in fact deer hunters, they do not know where to shoot a wild boar to get its vitals. In this article, we will try to explain where the best shots are.

The best shot would be in the shoulder area, preferably lower. However, you must pay attention not to aim so low because you might hit under the swine. If the hog is quartering away or towards you, you will want to place the shot so that the bullet will end up in the vitals, right between the shoulders. Of course, this means that the bullet must penetrate well.

There have been many discussions among hunters about shooting a hog in the head. Indeed, it is deadly efficient, but only if you hit the animal in the brain. The downside is that the wild boar has a small brain and this means that the likelihood of making a deadly shot is much reduced. In addition, its brain is very well protected by a thick skull, which means that you will need a tough bullet in order to penetrate.

Probably the most debated topic is of the old “behind-the-ear-with-a-22″ story, although not many have practiced it. This works great, but only if the shooter is next to the boar, but it isn’t very efficient nor should it be tried at bigger distances. The bullets used in rimfire cartridges, especially in the 22 long rifles, are in most cases quite soft, and do not have enough power in order to penetrate very well. In this case, the bullet will most likely flatten out on the bone of the boar’s skull, meaning that it won’t get the job done as you had hoped.

A broken shoulder will certainly put a wild boar down on the spot, just as it will do with basically any other type of game. This can prove to be of great help, as you will be able to do a follow-up shot, if it is necessary. The best case scenario would be to kill it quickly and efficiently, avoiding trailing the animal. In the case of a mature hog, you certainly don’t want him to approach you with its sharp tusks.

The question is: how much gun do we need to take down a hog? The answer is not that simple as it depends upon the boar and the placement of the bullet. A general rule says that first-time boar hunters should start with any of the cartridges in the.30-30 Winchester as they offer enough power for most of these animals, especially with the 170-grain bullets of proper construction. Lesser cartridges can be used for smaller hogs.

Join us in the second part of the article where we will discuss about choosing the appropriate ammo for taking down a wild boar.

By: Adrian Padeanu

About the Author:

If you are constantly updated on the latest in hunting, then you may have heard about pig hunting. This, of course, does not involve shooting swine out of the barn, or getting some pigs into the open and then shooting them down. The real pig hunting involves you going after the feral wild pigs, which are deemed in many parts of the world to be exotic and non-native species that can pose threats to the environment. In many cases, wild pigs – often referred to as boars or feral pigs – can destroy farms and kill livestock. In some cases, however, they can be deemed as a valuable addition to an environment, especially where they are the scavengers or cleaners.

In some Australian states, the wild pig is considered as an unprotected species that can be hunted all year round, and with no limits to their harvest. As long as the hunter hunting them has a valid license, as well as the express permission of the person who owns the land on which they wish to hunt, then the hunter may hunt as many wild boar as he or she pleases. If you own property and have feral pigs, then you can hunt them in some states without having to present a license.

Here are a few more facts about wild pigs that you may have to be aware of if you wish to engage in wild pig hunting.

- It is illegal to herd feral pigs in a facility or space and then use them for hunting in some states. If you are offered the chance to hunt at a facility and you know that your state has a law against operating hunting facilities, then steer clear of the offer.

- It is illegal in some states to release hogs out into the wild, as domesticated pigs can indeed turn wild once let loose. You will simply be adding to the feral pig population if you do this. If you discover people doing this in your area, you have the duty to talk to your local conservation facility or game warden immediately.

- Feral pigs are not your small and cute pigs – they can weight over a hundred pounds each, and if you wish to take the trophy-size ones down, they can be as tall as three feet, as long as six feet, and even as much as two hundred + kilograms in weight. They can therefore be vicious and difficult to fend off if they start attacking you, so know your safety procedures.

- Feral pigs will often keep a small home territory, which can often be about a several square kilometers. However, if they start running out of food, they can start expanding their home territory quickly, so you may need to do some speculation. There may be feral pig territory maps at your local conservation and game center, so you can consult them for more information on where you should go, and how far you should go to start hunting pigs.

- Never underestimate pigs. They can swim and run as fast as fifty kilometers an hour.

These are only a few facts that you should be aware of as you start pig hunting. For more information, talk to local pig hunters and ask for tips about getting yourself started in pig hunting. Talk to your local game hunters for more details on what you should or should not do during your pig hunt, and ask for tips on what you should bring just in case the weather changes. If you have a lot of research under your belt, and if you know a lot about hunting in general, then you will find it easy and enjoyable to hunt wild pigs, and help the environment in your state at the same time!

By: Richard Simm

About the Author:

After finding out the best areas where a hog should be shot in order to take him down, we are going to talk about what bullets should you pick for accomplishing that. You will definitely need one that is tough enough so that it will be able to penetrate, with a large enough diameter for delivering plenty of knockdown power. Most of hog hunters prefer using heavy bullets, but not necessarily the heaviest one for a specific cartridge. To give you an example, in a.30-06, 180-grain bullets should do the job very well. For a.270 Winchester, a 150-grain bullet will be suitable for this particular type of hunting.

If you have a .45-70, some recommend using a 300-grain jacketed bullet, while for a 44 mag., a 240-grain jacketed bullet would have to be the best all-around hunting slug. However, for hunting big boars, you would have to choose something a little bit bigger in order to have enough power for taking them down.

You should think of a hog as being a tougher and more dangerous variant of the deer. However, taking into consideration that they bodies are differently constructed, you will need a different approach. The gristle and fat that exists on the outside of some of the most domesticated wild boar out there can cause serious issues.

There have been many stories about soft bullets that flatted against the rough shield of fat and gristle that lies on the outside shoulders of mature hogs. Many consider this to be very possible so give that some thought before picking out your ammo. This shield can also very well prevent a good blood trail, despite the fact that the bullet might penetrate well in the area.

Nevertheless, always remember that it is considerably better to use a little bit of the meat that is around the boar’s shoulders, rather than losing the entire animal, because you have decided to take a risky shot in order to save the meat of the hog. If you plan on hunting from an elevated stand, your best choice would have to be to place a shot right between the hog’s shoulders. Never forget where the animal’s vitals are – between the shoulders.

You will have to be careful with a behind the shoulder shot as the lungs and heart of a hog are not as far back as with a deer. In addition, you must be aware of the cape that the bigger boars have over their shoulders. It is in fact a large fatty patch that is very hard to penetrate. In some of the biggest boars out there, it can even be a couple of inches thick. You might as well want to pick up some deep penetrating bullets from Winchester or other similar models.

When you pursue a wounded wild boar to finish the kill, you will need to be very careful as they have the tendency to turn and charge their attackers. To protect yourself, it would be best to carry a knife.

As you can see, there are a lot to take into consideration as far as hunting a wild boar in an efficient way. Get a proper gun and ammo and aim between the shoulders if you can.

By: Adrian Padeanu

About the Author:

The secret is out. Hog hunting is a hair-raising, heart pounding experience that is turning average hunters into full blown adrenaline junkies. Many hunters will tell you hog hunting is the fastest growing sport in the United States and with new hog hunting outfitters popping up all over the country, it’s hard to disagree with them. Hog hunting is a year-round sport that offers an unparalleled adrenaline rush for both rookie and seasoned hunters. However, with thousands of new hunters flocking to this sport every year, it’s no surprise that more and more of these hunters are going home empty-handed and completely frustrated. Just by simply becoming aware of some bad habits, you can greatly increase your chances of bringing down that trophy hog and end up having one of the most exciting experiences of your life.

1. Impatience – among all of the bad habits, impatience is the one habit that frustrates outfitters the most. One prime example is how impatient hunters simply will not wait for the right shot. Instead, these hunters tend to rush their shots and will even go for the dreaded “running shot” and try to shoot a hog as it runs away. Hogs are in constant motion so practice being patient and wait for your shot – it will come. Another great example is when an impatient hunter leaves his stand before it gets dark. Hogs often move during the twilight hour so the impatient hunter misses an excellent opportunity by getting out of his stand too early. Patience is your ally when it comes to hog hunting – use it to your advantage and you will end up having memories that will last a lifetime.

2. Poor Shot Placement – another tell-tale sign of the unsuccessful hog hunter is poor shot placement. This bad habit is easy to spot because the hunter will go for the head shot in order to save meat or to impress his buddies. This bad habit usually results in a wounded hog with its snout or jaw blown off. Even expert marksmen have trouble with head shots simply because the head is a much smaller target that tends to be in constant motion. Shot placement is critical to bringing down that trophy boar so do yourself a favor and learn where the kill zones are located on a hog.

3. Underestimating a hog’s vision – unsuccessful hog hunters are notorious for underestimating how well a hog can see. It’s well known that hogs have a powerful sense of smell and acute hearing but there is a myth in the hog hunting community that hogs have poor vision. The unsuccessful hunter will habitually alert a hog to his presence by grabbing his gun or bow and ruin any chance of getting a shot. You might get away with slow movement but fast movement will get you caught every time. Stay as still as possible and never underestimate how well a hog can see.

4. Assuming he missed – another bad habit of the unsuccessful hog hunter is to immediately assume he missed if he shoots a hog and it runs away. Subsequently, the hunter refuses to track the hog after his shot. One outfitter explained that in 2008 he found over 160 dead hogs on his property that were shot by his hunters but never tracked afterwards. It’s a great feeling to drop a hog in its tracks but it’s not unusual for a hog to run after being shot. Hogs have been seen running away even after being shot with a 7 Mag so don’t assume you missed just because the hog runs away.

5. Underestimating a hog’s intelligence – a common misconception among unsuccessful hog hunters is that “a hog is just a dumb animal.” Any seasoned hog hunter will tell you hogs are quite cunning. Hogs adapt quickly to their environment and will make adjustments in real-time which can make it almost impossible to hunt them down. The unsuccessful hunter underestimates the hog so he fails to do his homework and simply won’t put in the time to scout an area which would give him a greater opportunity to be successful. Instead of thinking you are smarter than a hog, your goal should be to learn how to think like a hog and then you will be on your way to becoming a successful hog hunter.

6. Underestimating how dangerous a wounded hog can be – Approaching a wounded hog can be a fatal mistake. One of our members told a sad story where a friend of his had shot a large boar and approached the hog without realizing the animal was only wounded. The boar hog suddenly jumped up and mauled the young man who later died from his wounds. Hogs are one of the few animals in the United States that can kill you if cornered – this is doubly true when the hog is wounded.

7. Not bringing enough firepower – this is without a doubt the #1 bad habit among unsuccessful hog hunters. Many outfitters will tell you they have seen bullets bounce off a hog’s skull because a hunter didn’t bring enough firepower. Even if the hunter makes a good shot, a small caliber rifle simply cannot pierce a hog’s thick shoulder blade and gristle plate which protects the kill zone. By avoiding this one bad habit alone, you can drastically increase your chances of becoming a successful hog hunter.

By: Neill Davidson

About the Author:

Here I was beginning my mission to be a hog hunting fool that I now am… This dog Lucy was a life saver and had a great influence upon me as a person… It is what it is…..she introduced me to a sport that not only maintains me in great shape, but also puts groceries in my refrigerator. All of these hogs are organic in nature, providing a lean yet flavorful and tender pork product that tantalizes the taste buds. MMMMMM I got a ham in the oven now…. RIP Lucy………………………….
