Are you a bow hunting beginner looking to master this unique and ancient method of hunting game? The sport of bow hunting has gained a lot of popularity over the last fifty years. Many sportsman like the greater challenge of hunting an animal with a bow, rather then with a high powered hunting rifle. To get the most from this style of hunting here are some tips for bow hunting beginners.

Have the right equipment. Longbows, recurve and compound bows are the three most common types with compound bows being the bow of choice by the vast majority of hunters now. The cams and pulleys of a compound bow increase the force and power of the arrow as it is shot. When the bow is at full draw there is a significant decrease in the tension needed to hold at that position. This assists the archer in aiming as he can relax slightly at full draw. In hunting he can also hold the position longer which can be necessary to get the best shot at the game animal. This explains why the compound bow is by far the top choice of bow hunters today. Selecting the correct size bow for the individual is important to allow for the best shooting performance. Be sure to select the arrows that are correct for the bow you are using. Since different bows have different draw lengths it is vital to select the arrows that match up with he draw length of the bow. To short or too long will obviously not work well.

Makes certain you are well aware of all the applicable hunting regulations for the area you plant to hunt. Each state or province will have its own set of laws and regulations. Some areas have specific rules for broad head arrows to be used for hunting big game animals such as deer, bear and elk. Expensive fines can be levied for using the wrong type of arrow head. It is the hunter’s responsibility to know and follow all local laws.

Here is something to think about for all bow hunting beginners. Are you a hunter who uses a bow? Or are you an archer who also goes hunting? Regular archery practice is the best way to become a successful bow hunter. Do not put away your bow at the end of one hunting season, and then only take it out the following year and expect to be very proficient. For maximum skill learn the proper technique and practice on a regular basis, ideally year round. Remember – Practice makes perfect!

If possible take trips to the woods that you are expecting to hunt and do this throughout the year, not just right before hunting season. This will give you an opportunity to really learn the area and also to practice your stalking abilities Stalking skills can be very important since the effective range for a bow is only about 50 to 70 yards and a shot of about 30 yards is considered ideal. While becoming familiar with the potential hunting area you can also find where you might want to put a stand.

Consider using scent neutralizers when you bow hunt. The sense of smell of game animals should not be underestimated. This sense is so far superior to the human sense of smell it can be hard for us to comprehend. Their senses of hearing and sight are also significantly developed. This can make it very difficult to get in position for a good shot at an animal. When you hear a deer snort he is actually smelling the scent in the air. Remember the effect the wind can have in carrying your scent to the animal.

By combining good archery skills, knowledge of animal movement and stealthy movements in the woods you will greatly increase your chances of success when you go bow hunting.

Sports hunting is a game of patience and requires long waits at lonely places sometimes! A group can relieve the tedium. As a matter of fact, when people come together as a group for any kind of activity, including hunting, the experience can prove to be a memorable one as well as create long-lasting bonds of friendship. The only thing that has to be ensured before starting out on the trip is stocking up of proper hunting party supplies.

What are the considerations to be kept in mind while gathering hunting party supplies?

(1) Even in a team, each individual member has to check that he/she is equipped with a complete set of personal supplies as well as required gear for hunting. Group requirements as a whole come thereafter. Here, the group can refer to an entire family, or members of different families who have got together to make up a hunting party.

(2) Coming to actual hunting party supplies, basic equipment consists of sufficient amount of food, cooking utensils or gadgets, tents (housing), enough cartridges or ammunition, and equipment for storing and transporting game. The event should be properly organized so that there is no cause for complaints and the trip is enjoyable for one and all.

(3) Cookware and tents are classified as communal tools. If a number of people are going on a hunt, it is obvious that they would not like to just make a day of it, but would wish to stretch it to many days. That is why hunting party supplies assume more importance. Any goof-ups will spoil the trip for everyone!

(3) An odor eliminator is a welcome addition to hunting party supplies. Animals have a keen sense of smell and can scent nearby humans quite easily, especially if people are massed together. The odor given out is much stronger in this case! So if each member does not possess this tool, the animals can lead the party a merry dance!

(4) Hunting party supplies for a deer hunt should definitely include a large knife or a communal saw so that the meat can be divided equally between the different members of the group.

(5) Now where does one go for hunting party supplies? As usual, the Internet offers a helping hand by displaying them in online stores! Of course, if specific needs of the hunt have already been detailed, searching for the correct web sites becomes easier.

(6) Some web sites even offer to book specific locations for hunting. This service is meant for individuals and groups alike. Sometimes, hunting party supplies are also included as part of a package deal. Or, he/she can choose the location himself/herself and only purchase hunting party supplies online. It is up to the hunter/hunters to decide!

The hunting knife has many, many uses they been around for centuries in fact hunting knives were invented by the caveman, the knives were used for killing animals for food, for skinning, used for protection. Hunting knives were used for cutting tree branches for making shelter and were used for sharpening branches to use for hunting game for food. Knives were even used to cultivate the earth and they still are used for all these things.

Knives were first made of stone, bone or wood they were first made of metal in about 2000 B.C. using bronze. Around 1000 B.C. iron became the metal of choice for knives because it was stronger and stayed sharper longer.

The most popular American hunting knife is the wooden handle knife called the Bowie knife was first made and used in 1827 by the American statesman Jim Bowie with a blade 6.5 inches long 1.5 inches wide and .25 inch thick. The original Bowie knife did not have a hand guard just a wood handle riveted to it. In 1830 the hand guard was added. Over the years these knives usually were made with a 6 inch to 12 inch blade. Today most of the popular hunting knives are designed similar to the famous Bowie knife.

Knives are invaluable when hiking or camping, whether you need to clear a trail while hiking,it can be used for self defense against wild animals. A good sharp knife for cutting branches to prepare a shelter. A sharp hunting knife works great for skinning small game for supper. Hunting knives have many uses!

Of course these knives are very useful on a hunting trip. Good sharp knives are a necessity after killing that elk, deer, moose, etc. hunting knives are used for gutting, skinning and quartering your animal.

Take care of your knife, stainless steel can stain, usually stains will be surface stains and can be removed however it takes time to get rid of them. Carbon stainless steel can stain and even rust causing the blades to pit. Your hunting knife’s handle such as bone or stag horn, which are porous, will soak up liquids such as blood and will stain the handle if not washed. Knives should be washed by hand with warm soapy water and rinsed in warm water and towel dried. Remember putting your knife in a dishwasher will ruin most knives because of the extreme heat.

Also like the passion for pocket knives thousands of us enjoy collecting hunting knives of all brands and shapes. I personally have not collected a knife for over 35 years because of other interests taking my time. However recently I felt the need to start researching hunting knives and pocket knives again.

There are a lot of things to know before stepping into the field on your first bow hunting trip. A lot of people come to the sport knowing someone who can teach them the basic guidelines, but others must teach themselves. A lot of research will be necessary and there are some guidelines to know before even stepping into the store to buy your first bow.

Some people buy under the misconception that it is best to have the heaviest bow they can use. This is definitely not the case. It is essential for a bow to feel good in a hunter’s hands; otherwise he won’t get true shots, or won’t use the bow at all due to discomfort. The only time it is good to use the heaviest bow possible is when hunting for big game, such as elk, ox, or bear. A strong bow can also be used in 3-D tournaments when using very fast arrows and a flat trajectory. Otherwise, when hunting whitetail, turkey, and even small black bear, using a compound bow in the 50 pound weight range is the best choice. This size can put an arrow all the way through the target, while still being comfortable for most hunters to handle. The only exception to this is when using recurve bows, in which they require a larger weight. Women usually prefer a bow in the 45 pound range.

The most important factor when choosing a bow is finding one that fits the individual hunter. Bows are not one size fits all, and different types and brands will all fit differently. Be sure that it is comfortable in your hands. It should feel balanced in your grip, and you should be able to pull the bow at it’s draw weight comfortably. Many hunters use bows that are too heavy for them; they assume that the bow will either loosen up, or that their muscles will develop more when using it. Using a bow that is too heavy can throw off your shot and ruin your accuracy. Another important thing to do when shopping for a bow is to browse around. A name brand bow isn’t always the best choice for every hunter. Choosing a reputable brand with good construction is important but be sure to browse around too. Spend what you can afford, and buy the bow that is best for you.

The last suggestion for newcomers to bow hunting is to shop at an outfitter with an archery expert. An experienced hunter who knows his way around bows is often able to make a good decision, but a newcomer needs some guidance when making his first investment. The archery expert will be your number one resource in regards to buying your first bow.

Sportsmen looking for an additional hunting challenge sometimes turn to old-style black powder rifles, hunting deer and other big game at a closer range, with a one-shot limit. It’s a test of a hunter’s patience and skill – you have to really know the game you’re hunting, you have to be more conscious of the wind, and you need to be able to get much closer. It’s a primitive weapon, but many hunters find that it gives them a great sense of accomplishment, and makes them feel more connected to their ancestors, who used weapons like these to hunt for food.

Black powder hunting for deer requires you to carry to carry more accessories than you do when hunting with a modern rifle. The black-powder shooter needs to carry powder, balls, patches, a ramrod, cleaning jags, patch lube, solvent, and a ball pulling worm. Even if you have a bag that stores all this gear comfortably, you’ll still need to be extremely organized. It also ups the challenge of hunting big game at a closer distance, since all those powders, lubes and solvents add to your scent, increasing your need to be conscious of the way the wind carries.

Interestingly, the reason that black-powder hunting is done at such a close range isn’t because of the power or accuracy of the weapon but because of the limitation of your sight. A modern hunting rifle with a scope allows you to see for hundreds of yards – but the open sight of a black-powder gun doesn’t give you that advantage. Some hunters choose to mount rifle scopes on their black-powder rifles, but the traditionalists say that this takes away from the purpose of black-powder hunting.

You also have to patient and accurate with a black-powder gun, since you only get one shot – something that’s a real novelty for hunters used to autoloading or bolt-action rifles. And it’s a completely different type of hunting, one that many hunters have difficulty adjusting to. With a multiple shot rifle, a hunter will take whatever shot is presented to him as soon as he spots it, figuring that if misses he can take another shot. With muzzleloaded black-powder gun, however, the hunter has to wait for his one good shot. Even if the deer’s right out in the open in front of him, if he doesn’t have that one good shot, he just has to wait it out.

There’s a great deal of skill and knowledge that goes into this type of deer hunting – you have to know how close you can get to the deer, what you range is, and whether you can get that one shot. But when it all comes together, black-powder deer hunting is an accomplishment unlike any other.
